What Is Paint Correction?

Have you ever parked your car in the sun or under the lights and noticed those spider web-like scratches or swirl marks in your paint work? If so, and if it bothers you, then you’re in need of a good polish job! But it’s not enough to hire just any detailer to fix these issues. With the detailing spectrum being as wide and diverse as it is, prices, services and skill levels can vary greatly. With that being said, the number of products for consumers and professionals can get any car enthusiast lost in the world of advertised products. It can take years to master the art of paint correction on a professional level and the amount of learning never ends with new cars coming off the production line every year.

Paint correction, simply put, involves properly identifying the defects in paint, (such as swirl marks, water spots, scratches, and marring marks) and using a polishing device such as a dual action or rotary polisher to level out the paint and eliminate the defects, all while preserving the paint. It’s important to note that every job is unique, and some areas might require more localized attention. For some owners it's about making the paint as perfect as possible, and for others a little correction versus a full correction is what will make them the happiest. Having the discussion with your detailer about exactly what you're expecting out of a detail will better help them identify the service that’s right for you and what realistically can and can’t be accomplished. As there will be some conditions that detailers simply can't fix, that discussion should happen prior to jumping in.
